Bicycle brake levers come in two formats, road or MTB(mountain bike).
Road Brake Levers are designed to fit dropped handlebars
MTB Brake Levers are designed to fit flat handlebars.
Some brake levers incorporate the gear levers, this makes shifting through the gears and braking a simultaneous operation and cornering at speed a lot safer. Crosstop style brake levers are popular on cyclocross, road bikes and Tourers. These fit in line with the brake cables controlled from the tops of the handlebars.
