Johan Museeuw's innovative range of bicycles has been awarded a prestigious iF Product Design Award for 2008.

The iF Industrie Forum Design award recognises excellence of form and use of materials and retains its validity for the entire life of the products it is awarded to.

The Museeuw Bikes MF range of frames claimed first prize in the Product Design Lifestyle/Leisure category. For 2008 the existing carbon-flax Museeuw MF-1 and MF-3 framesets will be joined by the all-new MF-5 frameset, which is the first to use main tubes almost entirely manufactured from flax fibres.

Museeuws’ choice of collaborators was an obvious one, from IPA being the Carbon tube manufacturer to Italy’s most esteemed bike brand who have developed to Billato the unsung frame builder to the Pro’s with over fifteen years experience of constructing Carbon frames using their Carbon Wrapping System to produce a strong, light, responsive frame.

 

 Why flax? Well high quality flax fibre is a flexible, extremely strong, very lightweight natural fibre which has been used for reinforcing composites as far back as the 1940’s (an early example being when defence aircraft designers used it in an experimental Spitfire fuselage) right up to modern day applications by the likes of BMW, Audi and Daimler-Benz.

 

By using a high quality Flax Fibre/Carbon Fibre Twill composite hybrid sandwich, Museeuw has been able to produce a lightweight Carbon frame which has excellent vibration absorbing properties, whilst retaining the responsiveness associated with a Carbon frame.
